Originally
the Avro 748, subsequently the Hawker Siddeley 748, has proved to be a
very successful airliner with over 370 built in the UK and a further
89 assembled in India. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Dart turboprop
engines, the 748 entered service in 1960 and was the last type to
carry the name of Avro until it was re-introduced in 1992 for the Avro
RJ. The 748 also served in the RAF as a transport aircraft and was
called the Andover. This aircraft had a lengthened fuselage and a
rear-loading door.
