BAE SYSTEMS Regional Aircraft retains a complete commercial aircraft design engineering capability - one of the few companies in Europe with this set of skills.

The core activity of the engineering team is to maintain technical governance across Regional Aircraft, ensuring the retention of the whole aircraft design capability and maintaining CAA approvals. Regional Aircraft is Type
Certificate holder for the BAe 146/Avro RJ, BAe ATP, BAe 748, HP137 Jetstream, Jetstream 31/32 and Jetstream 41.

Regional Aircraft Engineering is capable of new aircraft design, worldwide fleet support and conversions to its own and third-party products. In recent years it has been heavily involved in the design of the Large Freight Door for the ATP Freighter and the conversion of a BAe 146 to the Atmospheric Research Aircraft. It also was responsible for the development and certification of a maritime patrol version of the Jetstream 41 for the Hong Kong Government Flying Service.

Its design and engineering capabilities cover the following:

Structures Design

Weights Engineering

Mechanical & Fluid Systems Design

Electrical/Avionics Systems Engineering

Electrical Design (circuits and installations)

Mechanical Systems Engineering

Repair Design

Powerplant and Fuel Systems including nacelle

Airworthiness and Flight Safety

Cabin Interiors

Aerodynamics including Computational Fluid Dynamics

Ice and Rain protection

Stress including Finite Element Modeling and Aircraft Loads

Material, Process and Standards Engineering

Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics

Knowledge Based Engineering

In addition to its core design engineering work to support the Regional Aircraft in-service fleet, Engineering is involved with a growing portfolio of design work on behalf of other OEMs. Currently it is responsible for the design and engineering of major elements of the Nimrod MRA4 fuselage and wings, plus significant involvement in systems, performance, weights, flight test instrumentation, structural testing and support to manufacture.

It is also responsible for the design of leading edge components for the Boeing 777, which are also manufactured by the BAE SYSTEMS Aerostructures business, together with design for manufacture and assembly on the Boeing 767. Regional Aircraft Engineering also has had design work packages on a range of Airbus aircraft (A300/A310/A320, A330 and A340-600) and now the latest A380 superjumbo and the A400M military transporter.

Supporting the design technical skills contained with Engineering, there is a full range of management skills capable of whole aircraft design, text, certification and on-going support. These include technical management, configuration control, project/programme management, business management, resource management and sub-contract management.
